International Paralympic World Cup comes to the Comox Valley

 

In just under 2 weeks the IPC 2009 Cross Country and Biathlon World Cup Finals will take place at Mount Washington from March 10-14. This is the second time in 2 years that the Comox Valley has been host to this prestigious event. Elite athletes will compete for world cup points in two separate disciplines, Biathlon and Cross Country skiing.

Teams from up to 22 countries in Europe, North America and Asia are expected to attend, including up to 130 athletes and an additional 50+ support staff. In addition there will be IPC technical delegates and officials from Europe and the US plus a number of VANOC staff and volunteers who will support this event.

Welcome the Athletes!

  • Opening ceremonies take place in the Village of Cumberland, Sunday March 8 starting at 3:30pm
  • Cheer on local "bobsled" teams as they race along Cumberland's main street
  • Greet the international athletes as they follow the bobsleds to the Opening Banquet at the Cumberland Rec Centre
  • Attend the opening "Taste of Vancouver Island" banquet catered by the North Vancouver Island Chef's Association (Contact the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce or the event website www.mountwashingtonworldcup.com for tickets)

Cheer on the Athletes!

  • Get caught up in the excitement of the races, ring a cow bell, make a flag for your favourite country and take a walk over to the biathlon range.
